Along roads in Iran, slogans of the revolution and of religious devotion are written in white cement on mountain slopes and rock faces: “Labbayk ya Mahdi” (“At your service, O Mahdi”), “I am a revolutionary”. They are made to be read from passing cars, and the landscape becomes a billboard.
Thread photographs these inscriptions where they stand, the straight geometry of the lettering against the texture of the rock. Those who pass had no say in choosing them.
Who may write on public space, and which writing is allowed to stay?
I wrote the name 'Navid Afkari' on a wall; less than ten hours later, the Tehran municipality sprayed over it.
